How long does it take after I sign up?
The short answer is: about 10 days elapsed.
Following is a blow by blow, step by step description of a typical installation
where Telstra is the end provider - not necessarily the ISP that you deal directly with.
1.
Application
This step is completed either when you sign up on line or once an application form
has been received by your provider in the post or by fax.
2.
Initial Availability Check
This is a cursory check of your local telephone exchange's compatability for ADSL. This also happens
fairly instantly if you sign up online. You can perform this check yourself.
This does not guarantee that you can get ADSL. There are other factors involved
such as the length of telephone line from the exchange to your doorstep as well as
local factors including the number of phone points you may have in your house.
3.
ADSL Installation Order
The ADSL order
is sent from your provider to their provider.
4.
Final Availability Check
A test is run on your physical phone line
that confirms whether the line to your front door is compatible with ADSL. Once
this step has been passed you are provided with an estimated exchange activation date.
If you are buying a modem from someone other than bpresent or your provider,
you should wait until
this step is completed before purchasing the modem.
5.
ADSL Completion Notice
ADSL has been activated for your line at the exchange. (You're nearly there!)
6.
Account Setup
Indicates that your "login" has been set up for ADSL.
7a.
Modem receipt and installation (non-wireless)
Installation of your modem is a relatively straight forward process but you
do need the correct accessories.
If you're buying a modem from bpresent
you'll receive enough components to get you up and running but you may need to buy
a line splitter, depending on the type of phone line you have in your home or office.
Once you have the modem, and the accessories, it's a matter of following
the instructions (unless of course you have arranged for bpresent to install the modem
in which case you simply need to give us a call to arrange the installation visit).
7b.
Modem receipt and installation (wireless)
Most wireless modems allow you the option of hard wiring them as well.
We suggest that if you are installing a wireless modem, the first thing to do
is to install it as a fixed cable modem - just to make sure everything works. This is
indentical to the process for non-wireless modems.
If your wireless modem is being installed by us,
we will install it in this manner (hard wired). Configuring the modem for wireless is a little
more complicated and can be impacted by your prefered level of security for what will
become your wireless network.
